QUEZON CITY - Dr. Sofio B. Quintana (right) Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) appeared live on PTV 4’s Good Morning Pilipinas. The live television interview is part of the regions promotion of the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) which will be held on September 17, 2016. Dr. Quintana urged those living in NCR to partake in this event to remove marine debris, and to identify the sources of the debris that contributes to pollution. For 2016 the ICC lead by DENR-NCR will be at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA).

What’s unique about the ICC, explains Dr. Quintana, “is the way we try to educate and empower the citizens to take action on behalf of the ocean, it is the only cleanup activity wherein volunteers are asked to act as ‘citizen scientists’.  They are made to tally the items they find on data cards provided during the cleanup. The information collected by volunteers is used to identify the sources of marine debris, examine trends in debris items, and increase awareness about the threats of marine debris.” Dr Quintana further noted during the program.
